Christmas Message

I want to thank everyone that   has been reading my blog over the last year. So here are a few Christmas photos of inmates at Christmas time. Even in jail their is a light of hope for all men that are locked up  in their cells over the Christmas holidays. I have read that even a hard convict men put their socks out their cell bars on Christmas eve waiting for a gift from Santa. Christmas shows the child in all of us at this time of year.

UK Prisons

WELSHBOYS RANT

UK Prisons,
What I don't understand about the UK prison service is that the convicted inmates are housed in the same place as the suspects waiting to go before the courts, which means they have not been convicted of any crime yet. How can this be right and just. What the UK needs is some kind of Jail system like they use in the USA. But this all needs money which the UK government says they don't have right now. But for someone standing trial Prison is the last place they should be. Prison is for the convicted man only.

Brazil Mug Shots

Here are two mug shots from Brazil. Here the inmates are dressed in red. But they can also be dressed in blue and yellow. I think the use of different colours is show the different prisons they are housed in.

The inmates wear block coloured jail clothes to stand out, and for the red jail clothes there is lettering of white capitals on the back of their tops and also on the leg of their trousers with the letters SUAPI used.

The UK poster for Scum

The VHS Art work for Scum

Scum (1979)

This film was made in 1979 based around the prison borstal system that ran in Britain from the 1920's to the 1980's. This was not the first time that this film had been made. In 1977 Scum was made as a TV movie. But was band from being screened by the BBC for being too violent, so it was made again with mostly the same cast for the big screen, it also had a bigger budget.

The borstal system was set up to take  young males from the ages of 14-25 who had committed a crime and would be sent to a Borstal Prison for a short, sharp, shock for up to six weeks, where they would be told what to do and when to do it at all times.

I think that's why the TV film was band at the time, was for the male rape scene that was very violent at the time, and to this day has not been shown on TV. You can now see both on DVD. and they are very good.

Inmates visits UK Part 2

First read part 1.

Part 2.

When the inmate is called down to the visiting room this can take up to an hour. How is this possible?. Well the inmate could be at work, which is at the other side of the prison,at each turn their are so many locked doors that the inmate has to pass through. As the inmate passes through each locked gate he has to be pat frisked, then if he does have anything on him that he should not, then he is striped searched which takes time.

When the inmates get to the visiting room then this time he goes through a full strip search. The family are not aloud to pass anything to the inmate or the inmate is not aloud to pass anything to the family member.

At first seeing each other the inmate is aloud to embrace their visitor. Hands can be held but no more. The only food that can be eaten is from the canteen that is in the visitors room, coffee, tea,  and soft drinks can all be drunk here too.

At all times an officer is moving around  the room to make shore all is in order. With five minutes to the end of the visit a call is made to the room for last goodbyes. Each inmate must stay in his chair until all visitors  have left the room. Then the inmates can leave the room too. Then each inmate waits his turn to go through a full strip search again, before going back to his cell or to his work place.

Two kinds of visiting UK Prisons

Here are two photos that show the inmates that have visits in UK Prisons.

The top photo is of the convicted inmates that have visits, these visits can range from once a month in closed conditions. To three times per week open visits. But convicted inmates are housed in prisons far from their home towns at the beginning of their sentences. this gets shorter as the years come down and with good behavior. Then in the last few years of their sentence they can be housed in a prison near their home.
When an inmate is convicted he must wear a bright coloured  vest or blue or yellow sash that must be kept on through the whole visit, to stop escapes taking place.

The unsentenced inmate has a lot more visits with his family and his lawyer. To have the inmates lawyer visit they don't have to have a visiting order. These visits can be held in the family visiting room or in a closed room, but a guard will always be in the room too.
As for the inmates family they can visit on any number of days. But will always need a visiting order with them. The unsentenced inmate is most likely to be housed in his local prison.

Visiting Jail/Prison UK Part 2

Visiting an  inmate in Jail/Prison is different in each country that you go too, saying that its different from Jail to Prison in each of these country's. Here I want to go a little more into the day you visit a inmate and what he has to go through for that visit with his loved ones.

In a past post I talked about how I visited an inmate friend, which was from my side of the visit and what I went through to get to the visit. In the UK their are no Jails only Prisons and the guilty are locked up with the untried.

The untried inmates are given a lot more visits with family and also lawyers which is set on different days to the convicted inmates. All inmates must fill out a visitor's list. This could take a number of weeks so that the Prison can make police checks.

When a inmate wants to have a visit he must always fill out a "visiting order". On this visiting order it shows the Prison to visit, it also shows the time of the visit and the time to be at the Prison gates. If you are late or come on the wrong day then you will not get in. If the inmate has been in trouble and is on "Report" then you will not get in.

In the time that the visiting order has been sent out the inmate could have been moved to a different Prison.
Their was a story of an inmate that sent a visiting order to his family, on the day of the visit the inmate was told that he was to be moved to a different Prison. On the way out of the prison gates in the Prison van the inmate could see his family waiting to go into the Prison for their visit, with no way of telling them he was being moved. In that case it was just hard luck. The family lost their visiting day.
Just one of the many hardships a inmates faces.

The inmate is only called to the visiting room when the family are in the visiting room.

Part two to come.....

Thailand Chains

These are the chains that are used to take inmates to and from court, and also used in the first six months of their sentence, Death Row inmates have these chains on all the time.

Frisking Inmates.

Frisking this happen's in both Jail/Prisons where a guards pat down one inmate at a time. With his clothes on. As these three photos show.
Female guards can frisk male inmates, but if their needs to be a strip search then a male guard must do it.
The inmates can be frisked at any time of the day, if a guard thinks something is going on then it can lead from a frisk into a strip search.
The inmate can also be asked to place his hands on the wall and his legs wide apart. The guard then starts at the collar and then works down the inmates body lastly asking the inmate to remove his socks and shoes.
This can takes  a matter of minutes, if it is done right and then the inmate can move on.

Prison Food

In Prison or Country Jail the food that is served to the inmates is more of less bad. Which I don't understand as a lot of prison/jails grow their own veg. Cooking on a big scale is always hard. But it can be done well, if cooked right. Some of these photos shown here, their is no excuse for the food looking more like slop.

Inmates need to eat three times per day, I have found out that jail food is the worst, and prison food is only a little better. The inmates should take pride in what they cook, but they don't want to be in jail/prison in the first place. So their is no pride in what they do.

If the jail/prison can grow their own food then all the better. Meat will have to be still shipped in from the outside, but most of the other things can be grown on the site.

That also leads on to the Hard Labor I have been talking about. To make the inmates farm for their food, maybe they would take pride in what they make and serve to the other inmates.
